Thank you for supporting our Parasol!

Planning Committee approved the Parasol on 16 April 2008 - and we finally received written permission on Saturday 26 April 2008.

We are extremely grateful to all those of you who supported our application and hope that you will enjoy the wining and dining under the parasol.

Background

When we opened Pepper & Oz we wanted to preserve the frontage of the Grade II Listed Building which housed the former Cridlan & Walker Butchers (now situated adjacent to the original building) and proposed a parasol in lieu of the former shop awning that had adorned the premises for the last 20 years as shown below (supplied by local company - Malvern Blinds).

We purchased the business and lease of Pepper & Oz, 23 Abbey Road, Malvern WR14 3ES on 27 February 2007 with the aim of creating a quality Brasserie to serve Malvern, focusing on the lunch, pre-theatre and evening dinner market – since opening on the 31 March 2007 the restaurant has become a destination of choice for thousands of people, locally, nationally and from all over the world and a major attraction in Malvern.

 The Company made applications for Listed Building Consent (07/00606/LBC) to remove a roller blind and for erection of the Parasol (07/00466) which were refused in May 2007 in what was dubbed a 'planning farce'.

Since the May 2007 refusal a number of issues changed – 

1.     The application for Listed Building Consent to remove the roller blind whose refusal preceded the refusal of permission for the parasol was subsequently found not to be required (David Murray’s letter 18 June 2007 refers);

2.     The Council has granted planning permission for the Morgan Statue (ref 07/00486/FUL) directly opposite the restaurant in front of the Abbey Gateway;

3.     Public opinion in favour of the parasol, as expressed through the local press (Malvern Gazette), local radio and television and petition (with over 1,300 signatories) at Pepper & Oz indicated widespread support for the retention of the parasol and its contribution to Malvern Hills District Council’s policy of promoting town centre regeneration and the government’s policy of promoting the café society.

A second application was submitted in March 2008 and approved by the Council on 16 April 2008.
